Overview

Instruct and encourage groups or individuals in exercise activities. Develop and lead a set of fitness classes for senior residents to participate in. Demonstrate techniques and form, observe participants, and explain to them corrective measures necessary to engage in physical fitness and maintain a healthy lifestyle. 

Responsibilities

  1. Lead fitness program for senior living community, including both memory care and independent living residents.
  2. Develop set schedule of fitness classes monthly for residents to participate in.
  3. Observe participants and monitor for safety.
  4. Instruct participants in maintaining exertion levels to maximize benefits from exercise
  5. Offer alternatives during classes to accommodate different levels of participation (i.e. sitting vs standing)
  6. Plan routines, choose appropriate music, and choose different movements for each set of muscles, depending on participants' capabilities.
  7. Teach proper breathing techniques used during physical exercise.
  8. Evaluate individuals' abilities, needs, and physical conditions, and develop suitable training programs to meet any special requirements.
  9. Monitor participants' progress and adapt programs as needed.
  10. Explain and enforce safety rules and regulations governing the use of exercise room and equipment.
  11. Provide residents with information and resources regarding healthy nutrition and lifestyle.
  12. Teach and demonstrate use of fitness equipment such as machines and weights according to set guidelines.
  13. Plan physical education programs to promote development of participants' physical attributes and social skills.
  14. Maintain equipment inventories, and monitor for maintenance as needed.
  15. Promote fitness center use and encouragement for participating in fitness activities.
  16. Assist with providing fitness educational opportunities within the community.
  17. Promote fitness and wellness continuously through newsletter, calendar, and TV monitors.
  18. Monitor wellness center/fitness room for cleanliness and organization.
  19. Collect all participant information, forms, and documentation necessary for exercise within the community.
  20. Attend and participate in all appropriate meetings and training opportunities in order to keep informed on current information and skill.
  21. Engage in continuing education by learning new fitness classes that may be of interest of the residents. (i.e. Tai Chi, Yoga, Balance classes).
  22. Follow established policies and procedures including but not limited to:Presbyterian Villages policies and Safety policies and Federal, state and local regulations. 

Qualifications

Education: Certification by one of the following credentialing bodies: (ACSM) The American College of Sports Medicine, (ACE) The American Council on Exercise, (SFA)Senior Fitness Association, or (AFAA) Aerobics and Fitness Association of America or an Associate's Degree (two year college or technical school) in related field preferred. 

 

Experience : Previous experience working with mature adults in a health and fitnss capacity is preferred. Previous experience successfully leading individual and group exercise classes, including but not limited to endurance, strength, and flexibility classes is desired. Computer literacy required.
